Seniors Transportation and Support Services

As one of the most sought-after retirement destinations in North America, it’s only natural that White Rock can also boast the highest quality senior support services. From shopping to transportation, to help with filling out forms, White Rock senior citizens have assistance available at virtually every corner of the community.

Start with how to get around White Rock. Those seniors unable to use regular transportation services due to disability can apply to use the White Rock HandyDART service. This is a

Handy Dart Transportation

unique door-to-door transit service that takes the stress and hassle out of getting to the shops, medical appointments or the hairdressers.

Speaking of shops, many White Rock retailers offer a free delivery service to senior citizens. Occasionally a minimum purchase condition applies, so be sure to check with the store in question.

White Rock also offers a Come Share Adult Day Program to provide assistance to those who, with a little help, can remain independent. The program includes therapeutic recreational activities (HandyDART transportation can be arranged, if necessary), hot lunches and access to professional support services including nursing and podiatry care. This program is open to all who qualify under Home Health regulations, or on a private-pay basis.

For those looking to keep up to date with the latest technological developments, computer labs are run at various White Rock senior centres. What’s more, the White Rock library has “electronic classrooms,” with free PC access for surfing the web or sending e-mails, for seniors who present a library card.

The Kent Street Activity Centre offers a number of vital senior support services. A seniors’ counsellor is available every Monday morning from 10 to 11:30 a.m., and no appointment is necessary. The counsellor can help with completing application forms for things like OAS, GIS and Spouses Allowance, or to give advice and information on applying for benefits like BC Medical services, bus passes, housing and Veterans’ affairs.

Kent Street also hosts the Fresh and Lively program in conjunction with White Rock Senior Support Services. Hot lunches and entertainment are provided on the first three Fridays of every month, excluding August, when the program doesn’t run.

The Red Cross also operates a Loan Cupboard support program in White Rock, whereby those in need of such items as wheel chairs, crutches and other medical equipment, can borrow those items, free of charge, with a medical reference. Mental health and psychiatry services are also available to over-65’s suffering from dementia and other mental illnesses on referral.

All-in-all, White Rock seniors enjoy support services second to none. From housing to transport, meals to medical support, recreational activities to ongoing education, this community is top class in every sense.
